Planet Fitness, one of the largest fitness franchisors with 2,039 stores located across several countries, will require all guests to wear a face mask when visiting any of the brand’s open fitness centers. To date, 1,450 of the brand’s gyms have been reopened across 46 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and Australia.
In addition to this new mask requirement, Planet Fitness has taken additional steps such as strengthening its existing cleanliness policies and providing training to its staff, to ensure the safety and comfort of its guests and employees.
“As we continue to face the COVID-19 pandemic, amid an ongoing global health crisis, wellness has never been as essential to our collective community as it is today,” said Chris Rondeau, CEO at Planet Fitness. “Gyms are part of the solution and a key element of the healthcare delivery system, providing much-needed access for people to exercise and stay healthy. Given our leadership position within the industry, we believe it’s our responsibility to further protect our members, employees, and communities so that we can all safely focus on our health, which is more important now than ever before.”
While COVID-19 is undoubtedly a key issue facing the world, Planet Fitness assets that keeping its customers healthy is equally important. This is due to the fact that in the U.S. over the past 20 years, obesity has increased 42.4 per cent among adults, with 18.5 per cent of children and adolescents also being classified as obese.
“While COVID-19 is a serious public health issue, so too is the epidemic of obesity and chronic disease killing 1.7 million Americans every year,” said Dr. Ian Norton, Health Emergency response expert, founder of Respond Global and former head of Emergency Medical Team response with World Health Organization. “Fitness contributes to lowering rates of non-communicable diseases related to sedentary lifestyles and obesity, and improves mental health, physical health and overall well-being.”
For clients still remaining at home, Planet Fitness is offering ‘Home Work-Ins’ on its Facebook and YouTube platforms, which comprise of 20 minutes or less of Planet Fitness trainers and celebrity guests leading a workout. The brand also has over 500 exercises on its free mobile app.
