The International Franchise Fair was the first fair dedicated to this business model to start up in Spain and this year celebrates its 28th anniversary as a driver of the franchising sector in this country. Over the years it has become an increasingly important meeting point for the real players in the sector in Spain – franchisers, franchisees, future franchisees, entrepreneurs, consultants and more, all of whom are looking to find the best opportunities for building a successful business.
The franchise industry is growing and SIF reflects this growth. Each show is attended by some 9,000 professionals interested in being a part of this business model and wanting to see what the close-on 400 brands have to offer. The commercial content of the fair has grown in recent years on the back of the deal struck between MFV Expositions, the leading organizer of franchise fairs, and Feria Valencia.
The deal has led the international aspect of the fair to become considerably stronger, with franchise names exhibiting from countries including the United State, Mexico, Portugal, Italy and France. It also fulfils a dual objective: to open the SIF showcase up to companies from all over the world, whilst also offering exhibitors the possibility of expanding their business model successfully where it is of strategic interest to them to do so.
Franchise system in Spain expanding
Spain’s franchise sector is growing and progressing well, as is reflected in the annual report published by the Spanish Association of Franchisers, AEF. According to the report, all the variables have increased over the figures for 2015: number of networks +5.3%; number of establishments +7.1%, employment generated +5.9% and overall turnover +1.9%.
The figure at the end of the 2016 exercise showed that turnover from franchising hit 26,991.8 million euros in Spain, a 1.9% increase on the previous year. Spain’s franchise industry now comprises a total of 1,298 brands, 5.3% up on 2015, with more than 1,074, or 8.7%, having originated in Spain and the remaining 224 (17.3%) being from 28 different countries, particularly France, the USA, Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany. In all, there are 66 networks more than in December 2015 – 60 Spanish and six foreign.
As well as being a commercial show, SIF is also an education and information forum that showcases this business system. In the Franchising Classroom SIF offers a programme of lectures every year that it puts together in collaboration with the AEF and that covers the issues that are of most interest to those in the industry such as motivation, the entrepreneurial spirit, financing and legal issues, amongst other things.
With the International Meetings, SIF offers companies exhibiting the possibility of having pre-arranged meetings with the top representatives of the franchising industry, mainly from the countries of Latin America, who come to SIF to attend the Annual Meeting of the FIAF, the Ibero-American Federation of Franchises.
Equally, the SIF TV Channel offers exhibitors the possibility to talk about their business concept on air for two or three minutes, and outline its advantages and priorities for expansion. The clips are circulated on various social networks and through the fair’s newsletter.
SIF will be opening its doors again this coming 19th, 20th and 21st October at Feria Valencia and will be showing first-hand, direct to visitors, business propositions from all sectors of the economy and will continue to support the brands in their efforts to grow internationally, one of SIF’s priority objectives.
