Receptive to Western ideas and culture, Japan has long been a target destination for Western franchisors. However, brands eager to set up shop in this lively market should look carefully before they leap; this country may appear thoroughly Westernized, but cultural differences run deep and these should be properly understood before that first step Eastwards is taken.
